On a warm and humid day on the trails, more than 80 runners took part in the 3rd Annual There’s a Black Fly in My Eye 15k Trail Race & Relay. Justin Kenney of Stowe, VT was the men’s winner in time of 1:05:59. Christine Crowe of North Hampton, PA took the women’s race in 1:17:34.

When the cannon sounded at 10:00 a.m. for the start of the Great Glen Nordic 300 at Great Glen Trails in Pinkham Notch, NH, the skies were clear and sunny. By the time the cannon fired at 3:00 p.m. signaling the end of the race, heavy snow and wind was in the face of every competitor.

Nordic Meisters, the largest weekly cross country ski race series in the country, kicks off on Tuesday, January 8. For eight weeks, skiers of all abilities challenge themselves with prizes awarded in age categories and through a raffle. For 2008, an untimed category has been added for those who want to enjoy the series but not the pressure that can come with racing.

During Christmas and February vacation weeks, Great Glen Trails will be hosting new cross country ski camps for kids called Penguins and Polar Bears. Penguins are children ages 6-8, and Polar Bears are children ages 9-11. Both camps focus on games and fun, while teaching cross country ski basics.

Despite the weather forecast, the third annual Porky Gulch Classic went off without any rain on Saturday and Sunday, November 3 & 4. Peter Ostroski of Intervale, NH captured the title of New England’s Best All Around Cyclist. Cathy Rowell of Bedford, MA was the women’s champion.

Drawing 36 competitors this year, including two father-son duos, the two-day, three-stage Porky Gulch Classic is the most unique and challenging cycling event in New England.
