It's going to be a great weekend!

What a great weekend we having coming up!  This Columbus Day Weekend will be one of the best in years if the weather predictions hold true and even if they're off, the color is so stunning that it will be worth the drive into the White Mountains anyway.  Here's a few hints on enjoying the weekend while driving in this area.

Relax.  It's a wonderful time of the year to relax and take your time driving around looking at the scenery.  That line of cars in front of you will only hold you up for a few minutes so slow down and enjoy the experience.  And if you're the one with the line behind you, consider pulling over so everyone can enjoy the scene at their own pace.

Watch out for moose.  They're particularly active at  this time of the year and the combination of them and lots of drivers looking at the foliage can be tricky.  Get up early in the morning and drive up Rt 16 between Jackson and Gorham and you may be rewarded with this:

Actually these three were very accomodating and this was in the middle of the afternoon.  This is a mother and two young ones.

Pretty close, but they didn't seem to mind at first.

Then getting a little nervous.  Here's one of the little ones starting to get restless.  Mamma soon decided it was time to gather her brood so she folded back her ears, the hair on her back went up and she marched down the line of gawkers sending them scurrying, then they all headed back into the woods.

I wonder who is being entertained more, us or them.

Maybe you'll get lucky and spot a local working up her firewood.

So come on up, it's gonna be a grand weekend and it wouldn't be the same without you!

By the way.... we expect to have the Auto Road fully open for all traffic except motorcycles this weekend.  As always and especially at this time of the year this is WEATHER PERMITTING so if there's clouds on the summit and the temps in the valley are in the 40's you might want to call first.  (closed to motorcycles because of the volume of sand used to treat the pavement on the upper mountain during last weeks icing).

Crazy Moose Draw was named when John Frado, the trail designer, had a very close encounter with a very mad moose.
